FBI will not longer accept FOIA requests beginning 3/1
Federal Bureau of Investigation – Freedom of Information Act
I recently read an article about the FBI’s decision to change up requests that are sent under the Freedom of Information Act. They are changing the way information can be obtained from them from email to a form fill starting 3/1/17.
Part of the form is that you now must include things like a physical address. That doesn’t shock me at all, what shocked me was the response to that. Some are in a bit of a tizzy over it which I cannot for some reason understand.
FOIA gives the the right to obtain information from the Federal Government but it never said anywhere that I can or should remain anonymous. Some are actually asserting that because of the new reform it will make it harder or more difficult for people to request information from the FBI?!?!?!
I am sorry but I really think that argument needs validation because it is really bloody pathetic. If anyone wants information from the FBI under the FOIA they should let the FBI know who they are and where they are.
I just fail to see the argument altogether on this one. If you want transparency, so should you too, be just as transparent.
Would it not be the pot calling the kettle black if the FBI under the same token refrained from providing information because whomever was asking was hiding behind an email address and refused to honestly tell them who they are, where they can be found?
I mean the FBI freely publishes all of it’s office addresses online for everyone to see and visit if we felt the need. So if you want something from them why not include an address so they too can visit you?
Besides, businesses in the private industry have been doing this for years. They want more than just an email address from people who contact them.
So why is that we don’t seem to have a problem with handing information over to a business someone we know next nothing about?
You do not have to answer that, it was completely rhetorical.
The point is, the FBI has a right to know who is requesting information from them just as much as we have a right to know what they have in certain cases.
No one has a right to hide behind an email address.
I am for this change as long as they don’t give anything to NSA who has a habit of letting anything just walk out its front door via contracted employees.
