Google Maps – New and Improved

Cristal M Clark

Good news for all those blatant speeders, Google is finally rolling out the ability to report speed traps, crashes and slowdowns in real time to its Maps iOS app, making the new feature available to roughly 1 billion existing users worldwide.

For those that didn’t know this, that feature was already available on Android phones, as well as on Waze, which by the way is another Google Map app.

Some media outlets are reporting this could potentially upset law enforcement but I am unclear as to why exactly, they accomplish virtually what we assume they wanted in the first place, to slow drivers down in certain areas?

The New York Police Department wrote in a letter a while back that “Revealing the location of checkpoints puts those drivers, their passengers, and the general public at risk,” which was in response to users reporting DUI checkpoints.

Pretty much all of the tech giants tend to align themselves with what users want not what law enforcement wants, they offer things to users that hamper the efforts of law enforcement in some cases and that sometimes do in fact put the lives of others in danger.

Google argues that that safety is “a top priority” and that reporting features can be beneficial to public safety. “We believe that informing drivers about upcoming speed traps allows them to be more careful and make safer decisions when they’re on the road.”

People do tend to slow down if they know about an upcoming speed trap, no one wants a speeding ticket, but then again people also tend to avoid DUI checkpoints when they are gleefully drinking and driving and if Google Maps shows them where the checkpoints are, that is not really a good thing. That does put the lives of others in danger not to mention the life of the driver who chooses to drink and drive.

Law-Enforcement-vs-Technology-crimeshop

The question with technology is when does it cross the line from helping society by making life easier,  if the tech giants truly care about safety, to blatant aiding and abetting in a crime?

Facebook Suspends Another Far-Right Group

Natural News Founder Mike Adams Lashes Out

Cristal M Clark

Natural News who has nearly 3 millions followers on Facebook has been suspended from posting to the social media platform, of course Natural News had already been suspended from Twitter back in 2017 and Google blacklisted Natural News as well, in a heartfelt and bitter response, Natural News founder, Mike Adams lashed out at the tech giant and called on Donald Trump to send our nations military “to occupy and dismantle the tech giants.”

Well, that’s just completely sensible now isn’t it?

eSCALATED_crimeshop

Mike had this to say in his Sunday rant; “The techno-fascists, including Wikipedia, have decided that no speech that questions any official narrative will be allowed on any platform anyone who questions the safety of toxic vaccines, 5G cell towers, geoengineering, chemotherapy or glyphosate weed killer chemicals is now maliciously attacked, smeared and de-platformed.”

Mike Adams, who calls himself by the way the Health Ranger (no one is quite sure if he actually obtains a real medical license however), called the Facebook suspension an “online ethnic cleansing” that’s being carried out by people who are hoping to “enslave humanity and create Hell on Earth.” Then he subsequently called for military action against the social media companies.

conspiracy-theory-crimeshop

Natural News, pushes and, tends to shove down one’s throat, wild and insane conspiracy theories even publishing an injectable DIY homeopathic vaccine for Ebola.

Natural-News-Mike-Adams-crimeshop

Natural News is a wannabe alternative health information platform and outlet but, the website also promotes far right politics on issues like abortion and climate change, as well as overall support for President Trump.

Not at all surprising.

According to Mike, “These criminals like Zuckerberg, Dorsey and Cook are un-elected, subject to zero transparency and offer no mechanism for due process whereby channels who are banned might defend themselves against unfair, dishonest smears or fake news attacks run by left-wing journo-terrorism hacks. In essence, the entire internet is now run by the most lawless evil war criminals imaginable, and they have zero respect for human rights, human dignity or free speech.”

Well, that is quite a strongly worded opinion now isn’t it?

At any rate, Mike is rumored to own 50 different websites including – vaccines.news, campusinsanity.com, and libtards.news.

It is not clear if the Facebook suspension is going be permanent nor is it clear as of right now if Donald Trump intends to send our nations Military to dismantle Facebook or any other tech giant.

Google Play Store Takes Users on Yet Another Misadventure

New Adware Ready to Infect Your Android Devices

Cristal M Clark

Well it’s not like we didn’t expect this right? Researchers have found a plethora of new adware ready and waiting to infect your Android device, and it’s all available at the Google Play Store.

CHecK-PoiNT-SFTWRE-crimeshop

Yesterday, Israeli security firm Check Point said applications known to contain this particular adware strain known as “SimBad” had been downloaded almost 150 million times, mostly by gamers. The adware can be found in over 200 applications by the way, which Google finally got rid of, after users installed it all over the world.

simbad-malware-play-store-in-android-devices-crimeshop

According to Check Point; “We believe the developers were scammed to use this malicious SDK, unaware of its content, leading to the fact that this campaign was not targeting a specific county or developed by the same developer. The malware has been dubbed ‘SimBad’ due to the fact that a large portion of the infected applications are simulator games.”

Check Point said the adware resides inside a pretty widely used advertising software development kit (SDK) provided by ‘addroider[.]com’. Once it is installed, SimBad receives instructions from a command and control server, such as an order to make its icon disappear in an effort to make the app harder to remove and old one but a good one. Then, it begins to display background ads and can open any URL in the phone’s or devices browser, which is a joy for end users I am sure.

“With the capability to open a given URL in a browser, the actor behind ‘SimBad’ can generate phishing pages for multiple platforms and open them in a browser, thus performing spear-phishing attacks on the user, the actor can even take his malicious activities to the next level by installing a remote application from a designated server, thus allowing him to install new malware once it is required.”

android-malware-crimeshop

And worst yet, the researchers said that while SimBad appears geared toward serving ads for now, it has the infrastructure to evolve into “a much larger threat.”

Of course it does, I mean why wouldn’t it?

Check Point was kind enough to put together a complete list of infected applications: https://research.checkpoint.com/simbad-a-rogue-adware-campaign-on-google-play/

Google by the way does have some pretty robust scanners in order to weed out and get rid of malware, however what’s been happening of late is the apps the malware infects are downloaded by users so fast that Google’s scanners simply cannot detect the problems fast enough to eradicate it before users have already installed the affected application.

Case in point, a couple of months ago Google’s detection systems had been neatly bypassed by a batch of 85 apps that, by the time Google was able to delete them, and the malware had infected around 9 million users.

In the days leading up to that, users in 196 countries had been infected by several apps that were capable of accessing contact lists and SMS messages and recording audio. Many are wondering if Google simply can’t keep up or if they loosened the rules and became careless with new aps and developers.

End users are beginning to become very concerned over privacy, leaks, and malware that eventually steal sensitive user data.

Google is one of the top tech companies in the world, but continue to allow for mishaps like this to happen and someone will eventually come along and knock them promptly off of that very throne.

NYPD Sends Cease and Desist Letter to Google and Waze.

NYPD-Patrol-Car.-crimeshop.jpg

New York Police Department – The Gloves Are Off

By: Cristal M Clark

I love Waze personally, I use it even when I don’t need it just because of the voice choices I get, I loved it when Samuel L Jackson talked me into work every day.

Waze-Crimeshop.jpeg

I have not ever used it though for things that the police would maybe consider an abuse of it, I’ll use to in bad weather so as to avoid accidents, or if I hear about police activity in a part of town I am going to be near and that police activity is usually tied to a major event like a couple of weekends ago in Denver when someone shot two DPD officers, I’d like an alternate route, or I want to be near the story because I am going to write about it, but I am generally not really interested if the police have a speed trap ahead or a DUI checkpoint.

DUI-CheckPoint-Crimeshop

Although this story focuses more on the NYPD, I am sure other cities are facing this very same issue.

Google-CrimeShop

I guess I had never thought of this, users are in fact reporting DUI checkpoints and the NYPD has a pretty clear message for Waze and it’s parent company Google in the form of a cease and desist letter issued to Waze and Google, the NYPD described that Waze is in fact putting the lives of its citizens at risk:

“Individuals who post the locations of DWI checkpoints may be engaging in criminal conduct since such actions could be intentional attempts to prevent and/or impair the administration of the DWI laws and other relevant criminal and traffic laws.

The posting of such information for public consumption is irresponsible since it only serves to aid impaired and intoxicated drivers to evade checkpoints and encourage reckless driving. Revealing the location of checkpoints puts those drivers, their passengers, and the general public at risk.”

Escalated-Quickly-CrimeShop

I agree however…It’s important to know that legally, I can’t imagine that the NYPD could actually make Google enforce not allowing users to report DUI checkpoints, they would technically have to prove that Google/Waze were encouraging users to report the checkpoints.

Which they are not.

As a user of Waze, the app does not encourage me to report anything other than maybe accidents, weather issues or hazards in the road, like a dead body rolled up in a carpet on the shoulder of the road that I might like to avoid hitting. You know things like that.

Google-maps-logo-crimeshop

Also, Google is testing out some limited traffic stop reporting features in Google Maps which would tell users of some form of traffic stop, I am sure that Google would not label it DUI checkpoint but to be honest, users are not stupid, they would be able to figure it out given the time and location of such a stop.

Morally though, if you are a user who is reporting DUI checkpoints, shame on you. A speed trap I can see, okay fine, but a DUI checkpoint? Hey I get it, some individuals take this F the police thing seriously and think this is funny. It’s not really funny.

CrimeShop-CristalMClark

If someone got word of a DUI checkpoint through Waze, avoided the checkpoint and harmed let’s say my children or grandchildren, I’d find out, hunt you down and destroy your life. And I know people who could in fact vouch for that this very moment.

When someone goes against my principal, I can be a wee bit relentless.

But, the NYPD could, if they wanted to and this is me giving you guys a legal way to up the ante here, they could file something like, oh what is that word I am looking for…oh that’s it a, subpoena. Because as it were, sometimes for those of you delightful individuals who like to report DUI checkpoints and take note of this, when you “report” something to an “organization or company” your information is “logged” such as the account you reported it from, the cell # that you reported it from…I don’t know just something to think about you know in your spare time whilst driving around reporting DUI checkpoints and such.

So stop reporting DUI Checkpoints everyone, it’s just a bad idea.

Google Taking on Manipulative Sites

Chrome Getting Smarter by the Day

Cristal M Clark

How many of you have encountered a website that tricks you into clicking on it then not allowing you to use the back button to get out of it the second you realize it is not the website you were looking for?

chrome-crimeshop

For me, I despise it and it would seem that Google is not very fond of that type of trickery either.

This is typically referred to as keeping users in place, whilst generate money via hidden advertisements, and it will soon start to become a thing of the past thanks to a new update in Google Chrome called “history manipulation.”

Websites employ the practice in an attempt to insert dubious advertisements into your tab history — every time you hit the back button, an advertisement loads, generating views for the website, and in some cases, downloading malware and users cannot seem to escape the page.

This really is a complete abuse of trust not to mention it makes it difficult for users to browse the web in peace, so now Google will begin silently flagging pages that use such practices.

When users encounter the issue in the future with Google’s Chrome web browser, the experience with the website will be flagged, and information about the encounter will be sent to Google for analysis and review.

When Google identifies pages that abuse your tab history, Chrome will be able to bypass the false entries entirely when you are browsing the web.

Google really does want to protect users by blocking malicious web browsing experiences entirely.

Google has not officially rolled out the update as of yet sadly.

Google – thanks for the holiday news, we users are pretty excited about this.

Kudos.

‘Shitty Media Men’ list Creator Being Sued for $1.5 Million

shitty-media-men-crimeshop

Moira Donegan – Creator of ‘Shitty Meida Men’ List

I had no idea this list even existed.

shitty-media_men-CrimeShop

Moira Donegan created a list which started off life as a Google Spreadsheet dubbed the ‘Shitty Media Men’ list which nudges women to anonymously post allegations of sexual misconduct by predatory men, in media.

Moira-Donegan-crimeshop

The list was created back in October 2017.

The excuse for being able to post such accusations anonymously is that women more often than not fear coming forward with accusations, fear of losing jobs, not being listened to, being blacklisted in ones profession.

I get that and understand it completely, I just am not so sure how I feel about publicly posting such accusations anonymously because of the damage it could potentially cause someone.

A jilted former employee, coworker, lover, someone who was angry because they simply felt that the accused gets more than they themselves do.

These invisible accusers can publicly call out any man that they want and not have to come forward?

I don’t know, the whole idea just doesn’t sit well with me particularly because some of the accusations might not be true and that could ruin someone’s life and career.

The list evidently went viral and it has caused some of the men named on it to fight back.

Stephen-Elliot-CrimeShop

Writer Stephen Elliott, one of the men named on the list is suing Moira Donegan for $1.5 million for libel and emotional distress.

In September, Stephen took a step forward and published the essay;  “How an Anonymous Accusation Derailed my Life.”

Stephen details how being named on the list and accused of rape has really left his life in shambles.

He was basically dropped by everyone in his field, publications canceled, uninvited to events.

According to the lawsuit Stephen plans to also sue the anonymous posters who have accused him of rape and sexual misconduct.

That’s if a Judge will force Google to release the IP addresses of those that posted, which may prove to be more difficult than anyone could imagine.

Supporters of Moira have launched a GoFundMe campaign to help pay for her legal fees.

Moira, In a tweet posted after the announcement of the lawsuit, made it very clear that she still supports the list.

Again, I am not sure how I feel about the list to be completely honest.

On the flip side of that, women have endured sexual misconduct in the workplace by men for more years than anyone truly knows and have never had a voice until recently to finally put a stop to it.

Google Design lead Kindly Tells GOP “F*CK. YOU. ALL. TO. HELL”

Google – Leads the Way to Thoughtful, Intelligent, Honest Dialogue

All joking aside, kudos Google design lead Dave Hogue.

In a tweet that has since been deleted, David had this to say with regards to Brett Kavanaugh being nominated and confirmed as our newest Supreme Court Justice.

brettkavanaugh-crimeshop

“You are finished, @GOP. You polished the final nail for your own coffins. F*CK. YOU. ALL. TO. HELL.”

Dave finished with:

“I hope the last images burned into your slimy, evil, treasonous retinas are millions of women laughing and clapping and celebrating as your souls descend into the flames.”

It is refreshing to see absolute honesty and someone with some balls who just said what he thought.

A sentiment many of the rest of us here feel Dave, no worries we have your back on this one.

google-rocks-crimeshop

Not to mention, Google seems to be pretty okay with Dave’s personal feelings with regards to Brett Kavanaugh and the GOP telling FoxNews “What employees say in their personal capacity has no bearing on the way we build or operate our products.”

Google by the way has been recently accused of anti-conservative bias at the company, something the tech giant denies.

Either way, Dave is one hell of a guy for sharing his thoughts with the world on Twitter even though he has since deleted the very straight forward Tweet.

Tim Cook – Apple

tim-cook-crimeshop

Tim Cook Calls Out Big Tech

Normally as most of you know, I do an idiot of the week on Wednesday, today I want to personally thank Tim Cook and Apple.

tim-cook-apple-crimeshop

Tim Cook called out big tech over sharing user data, the equivalent for anyone who does not understand marketing 101 or advertising, as basically selling out ones customer.

For anyone who is not an Apple customer, we Apple customers will find a way to get our beloved tech from Apple, and only Apple for a multitude of reasons.

The media tells us that Apple is attempting to only sell to the elite. For many of us who happen to own Apple products, that is the furthest from the truth that any story can be.

We pay for up to date tech, and we also expect that tech to protect us. Be for the most part, hacker proof, not sell our data because what a lot people do not realize, hackers are so easily able to hack us because our user data is sold like one might drink water on a minute, by minute basis. Or in my case, coffee.

Apple, for those of us who have been loyal to Apple, does not subscribe to the selling of user data to anyone.

I love that.

tim-cook-crimeshop

Tim Cook went public and countered claims that firms need to siphon user data to improve product.

big-tech-sells-user-data_crimeshop

And any Apple product is a testament to that.

facebook-crimeshop

While the tech might be more expensive, it also understands its customers on a level, Google, FaceBook, Oracle, AdSence, Target, Walmart, Amazon, etc or any other company simply do not.

Don’t sell us out by selling out user data.

google-sells-user-data-crimeshop

Tim Cook:

‘The narrative that some companies will try to get you to believe is: ‘I’ve got to take all of your data to make any service better…’ ‘Well, I don’t believe them. Whoever’s telling you that, it’s a bunch of bunk.”

Earlier this year, Apple began requiring developers to clearly communicate how their users’ personal data would be used in apps, while Facebook and Google have repeatedly come under fire for how they treat customer data, Facebook being at the forefront of that delima recently.

Just last week, Facebook  begrudgingly revealed that it had been hit by a data breach that gave hackers complete access to 50 million users’ profiles.

In addition to that, Facebook logged an additional 40 million users out of their accounts as a security measure, which brought the total number of users who were possibly affected to 90 million.

And that kind of breach would never hit Apple because they know what customers want, and are very protective of that.

Advertisers and marketing is all about stealing user data, Apple clearly gets that customers are actually not okay with that and are quite frankly tired of it.

Maybe it’s time for the door to door salesman again because tech and AI are allowing me, with the help of Apple to stop advertisers and marketers from obtaining my user data.

So this week, instead of a loser, I present a winner.

Apple and Tim Cook.

apple-applause-crimeshop

Thank you.

Google Letting Users Know the FBI has Requested User Data

LuminosityLink-crimeshop

LuminosityLink – Colton Grubbs

Google has begun the tedious process of letting some users know that the FBI had requested their user data according to what users are saying on Reddit and HackForums.

google-crimeshop

“Google received and responded to legal process issue by Federal Bureau of Investigation (Eastern District of Kentucky) compelling the release of information related to your Google account,” read an email sent to users.

fbi-crimeshop

Now don’t go into a panic or anything because this only affects specific users that are tied to the Colton Grubbs case.

Colton was one of the creators of LuminosityLink which was a remote access tool that was as luck would have it, marketed as a hacking tool that could control computers remotely.

And the Grubbs case was investigated in the same district as the FBI request is stemming from. The case is still under seal and some of the users who reported to receiving the email, well they purchased the hacking software.

Google can elect notify users of government requests when allowed to do so.
